More than four decades ago, what would become the Morgan Shepherd Charitable Fund  began with a simple conversation.

Sitting outside his race shop, MORGAN SHEPHERD turned to his good friend Ken Lanter and said, “I would like to find a family that needs help and do something for them at Christmas.”  Without hesitation, Ken replied, “Morgan, I’ve got the perfect person.”

Ken told him about a man named Billy Shough—a hardworking individual who walked with a cane and had never experienced financial security.  When Ken asked Billy what he would do with $1,000, Billy’s answer was simple: he’d repair the roof and paint his trailer.  Morgan did not hesitate. “That’s what we’ll do,” he said.

What followed was the first act of kindness that would spark something much bigger.  Morgan gathered a painter, delivered supplies, and brought along Quaker State racing merchandise the very next weekend.  He and his team stocked Billy’s home with a year’s worth of grocery gift certificates and even arranged to have his heating oil tank filled.

“That was the beginning of the charity,” Morgan recalls.
